The fascinating history of Ackergill Tower

This is a castle steeped in history and immortalised in legend - if these ancient stones could talk what tales they would tell, of bloody battles and savage sieges, dastardly intrigues and mournful ghosts.

The architecture of the current castle suggests it dates from the late 15th century, circa 1475, but there seems to be little doubt that a fortification stood on this spot earlier than this.

The Clan Keith, under John Keith of Inverugie, inherited the lands of Ackergill in 1354 from the Cheynes family and the original tower may have been built by his son. It’s around this time that the tower first gained its notoriety. Helen Dunn, known as the "Beauty of Braemore", was abducted on her wedding night and kept prisoner in the tower by the infamous Dugald Keith. Rather than succumb to his less than honourable advances, she leapt from the battlements. The stone on which she was believed to have fallen, and which bears her outline, can be seen nearby, while it is said her ghost still haunts the spot. The bloody feud between the Keiths and Gunns, of which this abduction was but one tragic chapter, rumbled on for another 500 years.

The estate at that time was estimated at well over 500,000 acres. Various Captains signing by the name of Keith looked after the lands in Caithness for many years, with the estate passing in direct descent for eight generations until the Battle of Flodden in 1513. It was then inherited by the Earl Marshals – but they struggled to retain it.
