Welcome to the wonderful Lyric Theater located in the historic Flatonia TX. The Lyric is a 2 story brick building, construction in 1879, it is the oldest brick building in downtown Flatonia. The Lyric an its twin sister next door started out life as the Fordtran buildings. They have been grocery stores, City Hall, a business college, the Flatonia Printer's Union, among other things.
The Lyric started out life as "The Happy Hour Theatre" with traveling shows and silent movies. The Lyric is 30 feet wide and 68 feet long, its 2 story with 15 foot ceilings. Downstairs houses the Theater and upstairs is mostly used for storage these days. Upstairs has the original wood floors and plaster walls with some interesting graffiti.
The Theater operated up until 1967 with Beach Blanket Bingo being the last picture show, until April of 2017 when Secondhand Lions ushered in the NEW digital age of motion pictures to the Lyric. Currently showing features on Friday and Saturday nights. The Lyric also host traveling LIVE productions from time to time.
The Theater has wooden ceilings and exposed brick walls. The floor is polished concrete. It has a 14 x 20 screen with a removable stage in front. There are 84 movable seats which allows the venue to be used for a variety of things.
The exterior still retains its "ghost signs" on the west wall. the upper being "Piedmont, The cigarette of quality, 10 for 5 cents" and the lower, "Meet Me at the Happy Hour Theatre" there is also a painted movie screen on the west wall that was used for outdoor Movies On Main, a free summer movie program.
The building next door is set up as a workshop / cafe, has double entry doors and large arched transom windows.
The Lyric is now one of the many buildings list in the Downtown Historic District of Flatonia, on the National Register of Historic Places. Its located on South Main Street. The downtown is divided by the railroad tracks, and the district retains most of its original buildings. This little town has a LOT to offer, its just waiting to be discovered. Just off Interstate 10 between Houston and San Antonio, it hosts an annual Chili cook off, Czhilispiel, the last full weekend of October, where they close down the main street and put up a huge Beergarten Tent for the live music and drinking.
There are plenty of photos on the Lyric's facebook page as well as its website.
