Located in South Wilton Connecticut on 3 acres is our home, originally built in 1790 as a carriage house and converted into a residence in 1900. The entire house is 1850 square feet. This is a unique house with a very unusual layout and floor plan.
From the front door you enter the Living room which has a vaulted ceiling with the original roof and beams, and fireplace with the masonry of concrete and stone running to the ceiling. There is also a built in bookcase in this room that runs along a staircase leading to a landing that looks down on the living room and also leads to a small loft/room. The living room also still has the original beams exposed in the walls and pillars that support the roof. It has hard wood floors and old plaster walls. All of the rooms in the house have old steam radiators for heat and they create beautiful accents to each room.
This house has two bed rooms that are located off the living room and a separate small full bath with old style toilet and claw foot bathtub. The smaller "guest" bedroom has hard wood floors, built in shelves along one wall, old style plaster walls exposed painted beams on the ceiling which are the supports for the floor of the loft directly above and original painted 1790 posts in the walls running from ceiling to floor.
The master bed room has a Southeastern exposed with great light in the morning. A working fireplace made of painted white brick and hardwood floors. There are two sets of stairs that lead to the lower level of the house the first set of stairs are accessed from the living room and turn once running under the stairs that lead to the loft and these stairs go down to the dining room. The second set of stairs run down between the two bed rooms to the kitchen /great room.
The dining room is a long rectangle with a working fireplace made of exposed brick, flanked by two small octagonal windows. At one end of the room are the stairs that lead from the living room directly above and the other end has windowed french doors. Down near this end of the dining room is a doorway which leads to the kitchen / great room. This room combo has hardwood floors and the kitchen counters are also made of wood. The kitchen cabinets are made of old wood and painted white as well as a built in cabinet and cupboard from the conversion.
The great room runs off the kitchen. This room has a Southeastern exposure, and a working fireplace with exposed brick. A working cast iron pellet stove insert is installed in this fireplace. The Eastern corner of the room has two sliding glass doors that open onto a wooden deck that over looks the property. There is another full bath off the kitchen with a built in shower with glass shower door. Next to the kitchen is a small laundry room / pantry.
The deck, about 900 square feet is on two levels where one takes a single step down from the upper to lower level. The lower level juts out onto the property. At the end of the lower deck is a built in working Jacuzzi. The deck is shaded by a large beautiful red maple. There is a small grassy back yard off the deck that is bordered by a lovely guest cottage which is also part of the property. The side of the cottage that flanks the backyard is covered in ivy and wild grape vines.
The main property is about 2 acres, a long rectangular shape. It has three old growth apple trees. Under one tree is a medium sized chicken coop. There are 3 to 5 working bee hives during the summer months and are large fenced in vegetable garden and rustic storage shed. Visible from anywhere on the property is an amazing ½ acre pond.
The pond is cigar shaped and is surrounded on three sides by forest and trees. The other side flanks our beautiful green and level yard. At the South end of the pond is a small path that leads into the woods and travels around the back of the pond over a two small bridges. Seeing the property looking back over the pond from the path is remarkable.
